Programme Objectives:

Computer science is becoming more and more relevant for economy, production and private life. Particularly, embedded and mobile systems are experiencing a boom. As the latest study results show, 98% of all processors are used in embedded systems, most of them in safety-critical environments (e.g. cars, aircraft and space vehicles) where the highest possible reliability shall be provided in real time, particularly in the case of ever-increasing complexity and minimum space requirements. Whereas in the past the focus lay upon hardware, the greatest potential is now seen in the development of software.

The advanced Master’s program in Computer Science at Ingolstadt University with focus on “Embedded and Mobile System Software” takes account of this particular development. It aims to provide in all 5 key areas all necessary knowledge and skills for working in this promising sector:
• The modules “Software Engineering of Embedded and Mobile Systems” and “Algorithms in Autonomous Mobile Systems” focus on specific aspects, different from the „conventional” development, that must be considered for the software development of such systems (e.g. specific operating environment, real-time requirements, distribution).
• The module “Development of Safety-Critical Software” focuses in particular on safety and reliability requirements.
• The module “Cognitive Systems” addresses the issue of context-related interaction between embedded/mobile systems and their environment, whereas
• “Communication Systems” focuses on the interaction of such systems among themselves or with other computer systems.

Furthermore, the program aims to reinforce the analytical and methodical skills, the key qualifications of students, to educate their ability to think about their own attitudes and reactions and to provide them with management know-how and skills.

Programme Overview:

The regular period of study covers 3 semesters (full-time program). During the first two semesters, students consolidate their theoretical knowledge and focus on a major field of study. Besides the current focus on „Embedded and Mobile System Software“, other major fields are being currently developed. The third semester is planned for the Master’s thesis. Some courses are taught in English.

1. Semester

Theory of Computer Science, Discrete Mathematics II, Seminary on topics from computer science, technology and trends of business information systems

Major areas: Software engineering of embedded and mobile systems; Algorithms in autonomous mobile systems

2. Semester

Project, Workshop, Key Qualifications

Major areas: Cognitive systems; Communication systems; Development of safety-critical software

3. Semester

Master’s thesis and colloquium

Admission:

Applicants will have to prove the successful completion of a Bachelor’s degree or a "Diplom" qualification in Computer Science with the final grade “good” or above or an equivalent degree from a German university or from a foreign university.

Occupational Image:

The program qualifies graduates for future activities in the academic field (incl. doctoral studies), in the public sector or for positions of project managers / leaders in companies with an international profile.
