On Your Way to an Internship Abroad (PiA)

Intercultural competence and global thinking have started to play a major role in a world which is growing closely together. Our contribution to this particular development is to encourage our students to do an internship abroad. Our PiA-service guides you during your internship stay abroad and it provides you with all information on contact persons and internship places available. Furthermore, we provide you with general information and advice on funding and grants. Use this opportunity and the positive influence of an internship abroad on your personal and professional development! This could be an intercultural experience of great value for your future!

We invite companies to inform us for free oour intranet database and make it available for all our programs. In the last years we could largely increase the number of internships abroad. That’s why we would be very glad to cooperate with your company in the future.

FAQs

When should I start preparations for an internship abroad?

If you start thinking about completing an internship abroad, you should use all opportunities you already have (e.g. personal contacts within companies, friends, family). If you want to complete your internship in the USA, we recommend you to start your preparations a year in advance, because applying for a visa is only possible after you have received a confirmation letter from the company and the visa application period covers 5 weeks up to 3 months. For all other countries it is sufficient to send an e-mail application 9 months in advance.

Where can I find the latest internship offers?

You can find all internship offers that we receive from companies on our intranet database. Furthermore, you have access to a range of search engines for internships via the Information Portal of our Career Service.

Will I obtain credits for the internship abroad?

You will find a list of foreign companies for your internship in the login screen of our university network. If you apply for an internship at one of these companies, you may be sure that you will obtain 30 ECTS credits for your internship as an integral part of your course. If you want to do your internship at another company which is not on our list, please contact the internship advisor in your department, who should first 'unblock' that company. For this purpose, the company will have to complete a Questionnaire on Internship in German and English.

Why should I do an internship abroad?

Due to global networking in the professional environment, business companies started to recruit more and more graduates with international experience. Furthermore, students have the chance to become more independent, to gain valuable intercultural, professional and linguistic experience within a limited period of time and to learn more about other countries.

Will internships abroad be paid?

Internships are usually paid (exceptions: Latin America and Australia, Great Britain in part). Because of the global economic crisis at the moment, internships are being paid according to the financial situation of each company.

Are there any funding opportunities?

According to the target country, there are various funding opportunities for internships abroad. For Europe, you may apply for Erasmus and BaföG grants, PROMOS and study grants, GIZand regional grants (e.g. BayHost / BayChina).
